Tempe borders Phoenix and lies in the East Valley section of Maricopa County. It is 40.2 miles in area and has a population of about 185,000. Tempe is the home of the main campus of Arizona State University. Local development began where ferry service provided a river crossing, which enabled local settlement and farming. The precursor to ASU began in 1885. Railroad development and the Roosevelt Dam also helped further growth.
Shopping venues include a large shopping mall, Tempe Marketplace near Tempe Town Lake, and the Mill Avenue shopping and entertainment center. On New Year’s Eve the city of Tempe has a Fiesta Bowl Block Party, one of the largest in the country. North Tempe has denser development and some high-rise development, while South Tempe consists mostly of single-family homes.
